United are privately resigned to the fact that Ronaldo will be leaving them this summer.
Arnold, the chief executive, is apparently doing everything he can for the 37-year old to stay.
The 51-yearold has increased his efforts to improve Red Devils’ team.
Arnold, along with John Murtough, has been in Barcelona trying to negotiate a Frenkie de Jong deal.
Erik ten Hag’s top target is the Dutchman, though the transfer has been slowed by money owed him by Barcelona.
Arnold and Murtough met Barca chiefs, including Mateu Alemany, director of football, to try to reach an agreement.
Ronaldo was pleased, however, with the way Arnold allowed his representatives explore possible moves.
According to The TimesRonaldo’s agents are allowed to speak with other clubs, such as Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Ten Hag, 52, spoke for the first times since Ronaldo’s decision to leave.
The Dutchman addressed the issue during United’s preseason tour in Thailand. He said: “I have been reading.” [that he wants to leave]However, what I am stating is that Cristiano is not available for sale.
“He is in our plans and we want success together. I’m looking forward to working with him.”
On why the Portuguese isn’t with the team, Ten Hag added: “He’s not with us due to a personal issue.
“I spoke with him before this issue came up, I had a good talk with him then. [What was said] is between Cristiano and me, but I can confirm we had a really good conversation together.”
Ronaldo is keen to leave Man United for the chance to win trophies during his last years of career.
However, he and his loved ones have had to endure a period of testing in Manchester following the tragic loss of his son at birth earlier this year.
United will play Liverpool in the first pre-season match, even though they are without their No7.
The two rivals will meet at Rajamangala Stadium near Bangkok.
