Fuming Brits are scathing about the restrictions at the border that require tourists to be able prove their weight before they can enter the country.

The Spanish Border Guards are authorized to prevent foreigners from crossing into Spanish territory. They can also demand three additional documents.

One requirement is that travelers be able prove their ability to support themselves financially during their stay.

The Spanish Ministry of Interior gives a minimum spend of 100 euros per person per day – the equivalent of £85.

If a traveller is stopped, they will need to provide proof of funds by way of certified checks, payment letter, credit card or traveller’s checks.

Without this amount of cash, sunseekers may be denied entry to Spain.

The rule, which is not well-known, has been in place since the start this year. It applies to the UK as soon as it falls under the jurisdiction of the “third country”category that is not part of the European Union

Surprised Brits reacted to Spain’s restriction on social media. They were shocked to find that Spain can prohibit travellers who have less money.

Many people didn’t know they existed because the checks are not enforced every day.

One Facebook user commented: “Think spanish resorts are going to be a bit empty…….”

Another added: “£85 per day per person….. What if you’re all inclusive?

“This rule would stop me wanting to go to Spain as I take my banking as personal and I won’t be showing my accounts to any foreigners. This is a stupid rule that will slow their tourism.”

A third social media user said: “Pretty obvious what the Spanish are trying to do, restrict people coming for a holiday who don’t have a lot of money.

“If people are on an all inclusive holiday they are not spending money in the local area, so not helping the local economy.”

The Foreign Office also lists the documents Brits may need to present at Spanish border controls.

These documents include a return ticket or onward ticket as well as proof that the accommodation was booked, such as a hotel reservation.

You might need to have a friend or family member stay with you. “letter of invitation” instead.

Although the requirement is enforced only occasionally by on-the-spot inspections, it could deter cash-strapped travelers who have been saving for a vacation.

Brits are being warned about rising flight costs and the possibility of cancellations in summer.

Many are cutting back on expenses to afford a vacation, but the cost of living is increasing.

The Foreign OfficeSpanish Border Control may require you to show your return ticket or onward ticket, show that you have sufficient money to pay for your stay and proof of accommodation. You will need to show proof of your address or an invitation from your host if you are visiting a third party or friend.

“The Spanish government has clarified that the “carta de invitation” is one of the options available to prove that you have accommodation if staying with friends or family. More information is available from the Spanish Ministry of Interior.”

The Spanish Ministry of InteriorWebsite says: “Currently, the minimum amount to be credited is 100 euros per person per day, with a minimum of 900 euros or its legal equivalent in foreign currency (with effect from January 1, 2022).”

It also adds: “In the event that, when carrying out the entry control of people in Spanish territory, it is verified that a foreigner lacks sufficient economic resources for the time he wishes to remain in Spain and to continue his trip to the country of destination or to return to the country of origin, or does not have the nominative, non-transferable and closed ticket or tickets, in the means of transport that they intend to use, their entry into Spanish territory will be denied as established by law.”
