Apple is producing a documentary on the life and career of Sidney Poitier, according to a source close. Variety. Oprah Winfrey will serve as executive producer on the Apple Original Films release.
Apple and Winfrey worked together on the documentary for over a year. Poitier’s family is participating in the project.
Harpo Productions, Network Entertainment and Network Entertainment are responsible for the documentary. Reggie Hudlin is the director. Hudlin’s previous directorial credits include 90’s films like “House Party” “Boomerang,”As well as episodes of TV shows like “The Last O.G.” “Black Monday.”He is also a prolific producer on television and film, having served as an executive producer for the NAACP Image Awards from 2013. Hudlin directed 2019’s documentary “The Black Godfather,”This article examines Clarence Avant’s life.
Hudlin also has two other projects under his belt for Apple TV Plus. He will be the director “Number One on the Call Sheet,”This documentary examines the history and roles of Black actors in Hollywood. Shola Lynch will direct a sister documentary on Black leading women.
Poitier, a talented performer, producer, director, and the first Black winner for the Academy Award best actor, passed away on Friday, at the age of just 94.
“To us Sidney Poitier was not only a brilliant actor, activist and a man of incredible grace and moral fortitude, he was also a devoted and loving husband, a supportive and adoring father and a man who always put family first,” Poitier’s family said in a statement. “Although he is no longer here with us in this realm, his beautiful soul will continue to guide and inspire us. He will live on in us, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren — in every belly laugh, every curious inquiry, every act of compassion and kindness. His legacy will live on in the world, continuing to inspire not only with his incredible body of work, but even more so with his humanity.”
