By Kassondra Granata

Around the same time everyday, throughout the whole year, our campus booms with harps and bells coming from the Davidson Hall tower.

Everyone has heard it, whether it has brought them complete joy or has annoyed them as they walk through campus to class.

It can be assumed that up in the tower, a series of bells in collide with one another creating the famous melodies such as the “Nutcracker Suite” or “Brahm’s Lullaby,” but that is not the case.

“The Singing Tower,” made by the Verdin Company, has been on campus for more than 20 years with two different versions being purchased.

This electronic device can be found in an ordinary, locked closet in Davidson Hall and with just a push of a button, music is sent up to “horn-type” speakers that are located in the tower above.

Scott McKenna, director of Operational Logistics and Event Management has been overseeing the system for some time, operating the music box and updating it when needed.

“It’s really, really simple,” said McKenna next to the electronic device. “It’s simply a digital recording device that you program and it sends up to a speaker that is in the tower. You are just hearing a harp and bell combination.”

McKenna keeps an updated schedule of class times for the semester to determine just when he wants to set off the device. McKenna is able to do that by just a click of his mouse in his office.

“It adds a sense of ambiance to the campus,” said McKenna.

Although it may sound like the same songs are played every day, McKenna said that they are not. In his office, McKenna has a book full of hundreds of songs selected by the music department and other committees on campus.

“It plays songs seasonally,” said McKenna. “However, out of the blue the “Nutcracker Suite” will start playing in the summer as well as a lullaby during finals, it’s all in good fun. It may seem like the same songs are played everyday, but they are different each day with the device going through the long list of songs.”

Aside from its daily schedule, McKenna will toll the bell for major events, in which he simply overrides the system by pressing a button.

McKenna also commented on how realistic the bells sound, even though it is just an electronic system.

“The quality of the sound is great,” said McKenna. “I haven’t changed it or updated it because of its fine quality.”

“The fact that it is just a bell is just odd, I thought that it would be a bell,” said Adam Goldstein, a senior. “To hear that it is a musical box kind of cheapens it for me. If I had a few more years here I’d even volunteer to ring the bells myself. I figured it would be easier to have regular bells, but maybe not.”

James McGowan, also a senior, said that he accepted that it is an electronic device due to how digitalized everything is in current society.

“The way that technology is now and how advanced it has become, it is probably a lot easier that it is computerized so it can be easier to manage it,” said McGowan. “It makes more sense now to have this box rather than a rusty old clock tower. The only weird thing is that Davidson is an old building and you would expect there to be bells.”

Porn. It’s all over the place. It’s on the Internet, On-Demand, in video stores and in magazines at your local gas station. In some countries it’s on page three of your daily newspaper. It’s almost impossible to Google search anything these days with out at least one picture of a penis popping up on your screen. Porn is one of those things that isn’t going to go away. I think most people would agree that a large majority of the male population watch porn on a semi-regular basis, and if that does not apply, then they have at least watched porn once in their life.

But it isn’t just guys. Every young woman I interviewed admitted (as if guilty) that they have watched porn. What is the big deal? Most said it was out of pure curiosity, trying to figure out why guys liked porn so much. After meeting a friend for lunch, she told me her thoughts on the subject. “Now I know where guys get all these crazy ideas from when it comes to sex! Don’t they know that it’s totally ridiculous to expect that a girl would do these things during real sex? There is a reason porn stars get paid to do their job…”

Perhaps she has a point. When guys watch porn, does it raise their level of expectations when it comes to having sex with someone? Perhaps, but I do not think all men are guilty of this. Porn delivers the sexual excitement that men need, because they do have different sexual needs than women. Most guys know that the porn they watch and enjoy is not what their partner would be interested in.

Let’s take a moment to turn the interrogation lamp around and take a look at women and their own porn habits. One of the largest misconceptions about porn is that you have to watch it. But what about those romance novels that many females like to read? You find yourself getting a faster heart rate when you start reading about your leading lady and her man in a situation where they are alone and there is a bed nearby. Do you think that reaction is any different from a guy who stumbles across a tempting porn video? No.

Who is to say that the books we read and the romantic comedies we watch don’t make us females raise the standards bar for men? I know I am always hoping that the leading man in my life will one day have some corny proposal and then whisk me off to Paris to get married. Newsflash, we are broke and paying off college loans. It isn’t going to happen. Just like most guys know that there is no chance you would agree to have a three-some on the home plate at Fenway.

There are many couples in the world that have had serious issues when it comes to porn. Either the guy is watching something that completely disturbs his significant other, or his lady is a total prude and will not allow him to watch porn under any circumstance because its “emotional cheating.” From what I have learned over the past week, the easiest way to level the playing field is to watch it together, and take the mystery out of it. Ladies, if your man is watching porn, and it stops you from sleeping at night, then talk to him about it. Ask him why he likes to watch porn and what is so appealing about it. You may find that he just feels lonely, and that watching porn takes away from the fact that having sex in real life is uncertain and can cause a lot of stress. You may find that he has unfulfilled sexual desires, and if you are not comfortable with helping him fulfill them, then try not to get mad when he goes for the next best option. I’m quite sure if he could do that kinky stuff in real life he would not be sitting in front of his computer.

When Amazon announced the Kindle Fire many analysts thought the device would be the “iPad Killer.” What arrived didn’t disappoint consumers, but it sent a warning to competitors, including Barnes & Noble and their Nook e-reader, a device that competed directly with Amazon’s Kindle.

B&N went on the offensive and launched the Nook Tablet (NT) in November, a device similar to the previously released Nook Color, which ran a forked version of Google’s popular mobile operating system, Android, which had been on the market for a year.

In design, the Nook does not differ from the Color too much. The tablet measures in at 8 x 5 x .5 inches and weighs about 14 ounces. The screen is 7 inches with a resolution of 1024 x 600. The frame has an angled corner to resemble a turning page, a keychain holster and a textured back.

B&N overpowered their Nook in comparison to Amazon’s Fire. For example, the Nook has a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. The touch-screen is designed for multiple touches and can display upwards to 16 million colors, capable of HD display. It also boasts a battery live of 11 hours.

The software, which is the most frustrating part of the tablet, runs a forked version of Google’s Android. It has been extremely stripped down, and one cannot access the Android Market. The B&N Store is the replacement, but its applications are second rate, pricey and badly designed. The web browser is the same browser one sees in other Android devices. It takes advantage of the new HTML5, CSS3 and other internet technologies advances with support for Youtube and other video websites. One of the cool things about the Nook is the native support for Netflix and Hulu Plus.

While it does boast an impressive 16 GBs of internal memory, only 1 GB is available for user data. The other 14 GB are available for content purchased from the B&N Store.

The Nook Reader, used to read books on the device, has a lot of good implementations like highlighting, note taking and bookmarking; while also providing support for proprietary formats such as PDF and DOC. However, using the application itself is pretty annoying. The software reacts slowly to finger placement while reading documents. While trying to highlight a passage, I’d place my finger on top of the first word, which it would recognize, but as I dragged the finger to select the passage, the software only highlighted the very first word.

The Settings application, used to customize the device’s software, is the most infuriating settings screen in any device I own. It gives you two options, Device Settings and App Settings. The former contains important options like wireless, power and sound settings. The Nook can be locked, but specific apps cannot be locked. Finally, the keyboard settings do not even allow you to change the look of your keyboard.

The App Settings section does not add much to the device. Here the wallpaper can be changed, and Netflix can be configured, but that is as far as it goes. You can also add your credit card information to the B&N Store, but it cannot be encrypted.

The way you approach this buy is important. One, you can buy it as a book reader and not be bothered by the nuances aforementioned. Two, you can buy a cheap tablet and go through heavy software modifications in order to make it work like a tablet. The Nook is a hybrid between an e-reader and a tablet. Yes, you can watch videos, surf the web and read books, but you cannot access the Android Market to download software to organize meetings and keep track of your schedule.

Battery life is extremely impressive for the device. It does last 11-hours while reading ebooks. However, I have installed two games and many other battery draining apps, and it has lasted the whole day without dying. It has one of the better battery lives on the market.

Is It worth $249? Yes. Honestly, the powerful processor and amount of RAM this tablet offers is extremely impressive, especially for the price. While non-tech-savvy people will not notice any difference between the Nook and the Kindle Fire, others may take note.

It is not imperative to buy this tablet, but if you had to choose between an e-reader and a tablet, this is highly recommended. If you are debating between a CRUZE Tablet worth$500 and the Nook, depending on whether you want the camera, I suggest the Nook based on the price.

The Nook is not an Apple iPad killer. Apple has found the formula for a successful tablet. I don’t expect the Android OS to kill it off either because it is too open, too flexible to compete against the iOS and iPad. Microsoft will take their chances next year with the release of Windows 8 and we’ll have to wait until then to see the real iPad killer. But, if what you have in mind is an iPad alternative, the Nook is a strong choice.

With the arrival of the Kindle Fire, analysts have projected the device to sell stronger than the Apple tablet, the iPad. While this is making many of the Apple executives squirm in their seats, this is good news for the millions of consumers that are rejoicing over the price. The $199 price tag is enough to make anyone swipe their card or type in their credit card number with a smile, which is saying a lot in this economy.

After having my kindle for over a month, I can say without a doubt, it is one of the best gifts I have ever recieved. I specifically asked for one for Christmas from my parents, but was more than prepared to pay for one myself if I did not get it on the big day. Luckily for me, and both of my siblings, we had three, identical blue boxes wrapped in yellow ribbon waiting under our tree, courtesy of Amazon’s gift wrapping team.

Online reivews from websites like MeanPC.com and The Wall Street Journal praise more than the device’s price. A review by Walt Mossberg of the WSJ claimed “Amazon is the only major tablet maker other than Apple with a large, famous, easy-to-use content ecosystem that sells music, video, books and periodicals. The Fire can be thought of as a hardware front end to all that cloud content.”

The light, compact and easy to handle design of the Kindle Fire is one of its most favorable features, especially for someone like me who is constantly on the go. The lack of a camera or a microphone is not really a great loss in my eyes, mainly because I have a cell phone and a computer that have both of those features. Some would see this as a deal breaker, but for its ultra reasonable price, sacrifices had to be made.

Being a commuter, the Fire is a great thing to have when you have two to three hour breaks between classes. You can read a book, watch a movie or tv show, surf the web or play many of their free app games like ‘Angry Birds’ and ‘Words with Friends’. The screen, although smaller than that of other tablets, is very clear and easy to view movies on. I had heard rumors that the touch screen capability was not as sensitive or as quick as that of the iPad or the Nook, but I have yet to encounter this problem.

Overall this is device has made my life a lot easier, from being able to check the news while I’m on the go or at the gym to being able to watch a movie in bed without falling asleep with my laptop on my chest. Obviously there are some cons to the Kindle Fire, but when you factor in that you are saving yourself $249 dollars by not buying the iPad, the cons tend to become much less of an issue. In an economy where you have to make your money stretch as far as you can, the Kindle Fire is a great option for anyone who is trying to keep up with the times but also keeping their bank account happy.

Birth Control. We’ve all heard about it. We have all sat in those awkward health classes where the teacher shows the class how to put a condom on a banana. We’ve all watched those corny 80s homemade videos where high school students talk about their options like a scene from The Breakfast Club. Those classes usually only taught a few of the many options that are actually out there.

For many college students, condoms are the ultimate go-to method, mainly for being so easy to get a hold of and because they are so easy to use. They also are one of the most reliable ways to protect against pregnancy and STDs with only 1 out of 100 women getting pregnant each year if used continuously and correctly (according to Planned Parenthood). Using condoms allows people to be spontaneous, which as you’ll learn, is not always the case with some birth control options. If you use a lubricant whiles also using a condom, don’t forget to use a water based lube instead of a oil based one because the oils can break down the latex on the condom.

Birth control options like the pill and the patch are the easiest to use and the easiest to get a hold of for most young women, with resources like Health Services and Planned Parenthood within close vicinity. Many women feel much more comfortable knowing that they are in control of their own protection, and with most insurances the pill only costs $10-$30 a month. Like condoms, using the pill and the patch are one of the safest ways to protect against getting pregnant. For many couples the pill/patch is a safe and convenient way to avoid pregnancy if you know that the relationship is monogamous and that there should be no STDs involved. The pill also has other benefits such as helping to clear up acne, preventing bone thinning and clearing up ovarian cysts.

But what about those of us who don’t have just one partner and who may just be enjoying the possibilities of having some single fun while still in college?

Thanks to a Tweet sent to me from a fellow CCSU student, I was introduced to the female condom. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of one, because up until that moment neither had I.

Crowding around a computer with three friends, I went online to do a little research. The Planned Parenthood website claimed that this type of protection is growing in popularity everyday, but to be honest I can’t see why. They look highly uncomfortable and using one correctly seems to be a bit of a challenge, considering six to 16 women end up pregnant out of 100 each year while using them. For those of you who may be overly cautious, do not try to use a female condom and a regular condom at the same time. It will not end well.

Another option for women is a diaphragm, which is a shallow, dome-shaped cup with a flexible rim. It is made of silicone and is inserted into the vagina to provide a barrier. It must be kept in up to six hours after having sex and you can put it in multiple hours before intercourse. The most interesting thing I learned about the diaphragm is the fact that it can be washed and reused. Read into that what you will, but for me that was a definite deal breaker. A diaphragm does not protect against STDs, so for many sexually active people, using a condom is just easier.

When I was a freshman, I lived with another girl who had a very active sex life. I was already fully aware of that fact when one day I opened my fridge and saw a box with her Nuvaring sitting right next to my whipped yogurts. Though I was happy to realize she was practicing safe sex, I was still very confused as to what it actually was.

She explained to me later that you insert the ring vaginally and leave it in for 3 weeks. When you remove it, you get your period for a week and then you just repeat the cycle. Yes, they do get lost “up there” sometimes during sex, and you will need a doctor to get it out. However, they are one of the safer options with less than one in 100 women getting pregnant, but it does not protect against STDs.

With only an 800-word space to get all of this information to you, I will admit there are other options out there for practicing safe sex. Planned Parenthood is a great resource for anyone who may have questions. Many reading this will probably say to themselves, “Well I already knew all of that…,” which is excellent. The more people who know about their options for practicing safe sex, the better. For those of you who don’t know your options, or have any questions, please don’t be afraid to ask or just search online. It’s really amazing the amount of information that is just a few clicks away. We have come a long way since those cheesy ’80s movies; thank goodness.

With the holidays quickly approaching, eating healthy and working out is a far stretch for the average person. Most either give up on their healthy regiments or “postpone” it till the New Year due to candy, cookies, and sweets.

Holidays, parties, and social gatherings all seem to focus on the food, presenting a challenge for those previously engaged in healthy eating. It is for this reason that CCSU’s dining services released a hint sheet for the holidays called “How To Eat, Drink, & Be Merry Without the Weight Gain” suggesting different ways for everyone to enjoy the holiday festivities yet also watch the pounds from packing on.

This bullet-point list presents seven helpful hints to get through the fattening yet joyous holidays.

1. Do not skip a meal – Yes I know, the common solution to fighting back the urge to overeat is to skip a meal before “the big one.” However, skipping that cereal will decrease blood sugar so by the time three o’clock rolls around two plates of food will be devoured within minutes and the scale will drastically increase by 10 pounds. Maybe that cereal doesn’t sound too bad after all.

2. Eat a light snack – When you are famished with no food in your system, it can be tempting to eat everything in sight. If you want to fit into those size skinny 6’s the day after than eat a healthy snack such as a fruit, veggie, or yogurt.

3. Focus on the fruits and veggies – Fruits and veggies might be a little dull compared to those delicious chips and dips but their one plus is that they’re low in calories. They are also abundant in vitamins and minerals, and will fill you up if you eat one half of your plate with those yummy F’s and V’s.

4. Drink plenty of fluids – Alcohol and high-calorie sodas and juices might be tempting, but water is the best choice not only because it is zero calories but also since it can fill you up before eating a plate of food. For once, water: 1 alcohol: 0.

5. Do not deprive yourself – Gaining weight doesn’t necessarily stem mainly from the type of food you eat, but how much of it you munch on. If one cookie looks delicious then go for it. But don’t gobble up the whole dozen. Telling yourself no to food will more likely make you over eat it and regret it the next morning. If you’re stomach says yes then go for it, but not too much.

6. You do not have to clean your plate – If you’re full then listen to your body and stop. No one is making you clean your plate. It’ll just make you full and will be counterproductive because if it’s a big plate then the pounds will definitely pack on. And regret will shortly come after. An easy way to make sure that your plate doesn’t become to full is to serve yourself. We all have that one family member that always gives you an extra scoop, even though you asked them not to.

7. Bring a healthy dish – You never know what the host of a party or get together will have to eat, so preparing a healthy dish to bring isn’t such a bad idea. This will ensure that amongst the saucy wings, fried food, and fatty chips, there’s at least something you can snack on for the night.

With this list you can surely enjoy the festivities of the holiday season without having to begin a new diet on the New Year to shed off those cookies, chips, and sweets.

By Rachael Bentley

Over the past decade self help books have become something of a craze, with topics ranging from self-realization, relationships, work accomplishments and parenting. I’ll be the first to admit that I have read a couple different books that claim they can help you make the most of your time, and enjoy your life. I never finished one.

That was until I stumbled across The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin one day whiles I was perusing around Barnes and Noble. Sitting on top of one of their many tables of New York Times best-sellers was this little blue book that caught my eye. You can usually spot a self help book from a mile away, but in this case, it took me about five-minutes of reading to realize it fit this genre. Also, let’s not forget to mention the title itself is so enticing.

“What is a happiness project?” I instantly found myself wondering, and within 10 minutes I left Barnes and Noble with my little paper green and white bag, looking forward to cracking the book open again.

This book is 315 pages long, and I finished it in a little under a week. It was extremely difficult to put this book down, as Rubin is a funny writer and I found it very easy to relate to her.

Rubin takes a very methodical and practical approach to trying to be happier (playing on her own controlling personality) by using a system of goals and spreading the load over a span of a year. Each month she chose an aspect of her life that she wanted improve on such as family, friends, well-being and work. She then would pick things she could do on a daily basis that would help her reach her ultimate goal. For 11 months she struggled but also enjoyed pushing herself to do try new things, be less critical of her husband and make new friends. For her final month, she combined all of her goals and ultimately decided whether or not her experiment helped make her feel better. Thankfully for her, it did.

She also made up her own 12 commandments to follow to keep her focused such as “Always be Gretchen”, “Lighten up” and “Do it now”.

The thing that I loved the most about her approach was that she understood that everyone’s happiness project would be different, so instead of just talking about what worked for her, she included other peoples happiness projects ideas from her online blog. I have multiple friends who have also read this book, and I have yet to hear one negative opinion about it. The fact that it’s a New York Times best seller may be the only reason you decide to pick it up in the first place, but the message and the great writing will be what keeps you reading it.

You’re sitting in class, the kid behind you keeps sneezing down the back of your neck, and all you can think about is where is the closest hand sanitation station is. The truth of the matter is flu season sucks. There is no way you can escape all of the classroom coughs and sniffles, and in a small classroom of 25 people, it can feel like a germ incubator. Thankfully, there are some very simple and smart ways you can keep your immune system as strong as possible to fight those oncoming germs.

First things first, get a flu shot. Don’t have time, or can’t afford it? CCSU Health Services is making it even easier for you to keep a step ahead with many different opportunities to get a flu shot, right on campus. The next clinic is Thursday, Nov. 17th in the Blue and White Room in the Student Center from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The fee is $20, which would be billed straight to your student account. If that time doesn’t work for you, you can just call the health services center at 860-832-1925 to schedule a time that does fit into your busy schedule.

Getting the flu shot can greatly decrease your chances of getting the flu, but doesn’t always help keep those pesky colds at bay. One of the best precautions you can take to staying healthy is to keep hydrated, and that doesn’t mean your daily five cups of coffee. Drinking enough water is something many people don’t do on a daily basis, and during flu season it’s even more important to make sure you have enough. If you are wondering, the recommended amount is eight cups/glasses of water per day. Drinking plenty of water is also beneficial for your skin, which can take a beating during the cold, dry months. So, remember when you’re thinking about getting a drink from the school vending machines to go for the healthy option and get a water. And don’t forget to reuse your bottle if you can.

Getting good nights sleep is an easy and effective way to keep yourself and your body in good spirits. There is growing evidence that links sleep and a healthy immune system. There is also a connection between happiness and the ability to fight away germs. A 2009 experiment by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University uncovered a correlation that people who were generally happy, lively, and calm were better able to fight off both cold and flu viruses than people who were anxious, hostile, or depressed. So by getting a good night sleep, you’re giving your body a chance to relax and unwind after a stressful day and letting your immune system focus on keeping itself in tip-top order.

Something else that people may not realize is that what you eat has a great effect on how well your body functions. According to WebMD, there are many foods that can help boost your immune system. Eating whole grains, spinach, salmon, green tea, fruits high in vitamin-c, and having a good daily source of protein can help boost your immune system. The importance of having at least one hot meal a day cannot be stressed enough, even if it is just a cup of soup from Memorial Hall with your custom made wrap.

Last, but not least, one of the most important and probably most obvious precautions you can take to prevent yourself from getting sick is a simple as two words. Don’t. Share. That’s easy enough to remember when you’re in class and sipping on your own coffee, but when it comes to parties and social occasions always remember to keep your drink to yourself. Even your best friend may be totally harmless, but the germs that she got in English class might not be. Don’t forget that people can be carriers for germs, but not show side effects, so they might not even know they are sick. Take it from someone who’s made the mistake and just keep your own drinks to yourself and save yourself the sore throat and stuffy nose for a few days later.

By Danny Contreras

The 2011 Japanese exchange students experienced their first blizzard in the United States following the Halloween-weekend storm.

This was the first blizzard witnessed by the Japanese exchange students Sena Hamada, Yuki Ni-igawa, Kento Sawa and Yuka Mishima. The Kansai Gaidai University students were visiting Boston as part of a CCSU-organized trip. In Boston, it was raining for the majority of the day.

Kento, a native from Nara, Japan, laughed that “my parents don’t know it snowed here.” He explained that in his hometown it snows but that the typical snowfall does not compare to the one dumped by the Halloween Nor’easter.

According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, Osaka receives an average 50.35 inches a year in precipitation. June is the month with the heaviest precipitation receiving 7 inches annually; on the other hand, December is the month with the lowest precipitation receiving just a little under 2 inches. The average temperature for the region is 42.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

Yuki explained that the storm made the news in Japan, “mM parents knew from the news that it snowed here.” Yuka and Sena, however, alerted their parents. Yuka’s mother responded excitedly at first, “’Snow!” Before asking if Yuka was ‘Okay’?

The students also reacted to the university closings and the class cancellations. “Lucky,” said Yuka gingerly. Sena explained that she did not expect class to get any easier due to the cancellation, “I think it will be harder because I have a presentation and I haven’t been able to do it.”

“In Kaizuka City [Osaka Prefecture, Japan] sometimes it snows,” said Yuki in regards to her hometown.

They are expecting class to resume next week, however CL&P has released a list with estimates of when power should be restored and New Britain’s status has yet to be determined. The school is currently redirecting the power from academic buildings to the dorms, and the power is yet to be restored school-wide. It has been five days since the storm and there is yet to be any progress.

Philip Pearlstein’s “Paintings, Drawings and Watercolors” opened on Wednesday October 19 at the Maloney Hall Gallery. The exhibition, which contains roughly 20 of his paintings, showcases Pearlstein’s contribution to Realism, a movement he revolutionized in the early 60s when Arts Magazine review one of his works.

The realist school of painting focuses on art that is objective; promoting paintings that lack narrative and promote realism.

Mark Strathy, a former student and longtime friend of Philip Pearlstein, and an arts faculty member of CCSU, welcomed students to the exhibition not just for its aesthetical value but for its educational as well: “Philip is a very well-known artist; but it’s a great show for art students because they’re all based on life drawings, and that’s one of the things we stress in our program here at Central. We stress drawing from life models. People can actually come here with a pencil and paper and sketch directly from the drawings.”

His paintings are all still life, and the majority have nude models in them. Mr. Strathy stressed the fact that the models should be seen as objects within the paintings and not as characters to a story, “He wants students to see paintings as interesting compositions rather than stories. He wants you to appreciate it, you know you can appreciate a painting on various levels—let’s say you take a painting based on a Greek Myth, you’d appreciate it on a story level— on a visual level. “

Philip Pearlstein was born in 1942 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and his career as an artist began in 1958 after his graduation from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. He received a masters from New York University in arts and began his compositions then. Pearlstein was a friend of the late Andy Warhol, an American painter known for his pop art.

Pearlstein strongly emphasized in his composition the lack of emotional value, “He really wanted to take the emotion out of the art—and you can see it in the paintings, the models look bored and distracted and uninterested. There is no narrative; if you have two nude people in the room, there is usually some kind of narrative but here there isn’t. They’re just there. He wanted to make the figures be just another object, so the figures are surrounded by objects, and the figures are just objects themselves,” explained Strathy.

The Philip Pearlstein exhibition will be in display from October 20 to November 18 from 1:00- 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free and free parking is available for non-CCSU attendees.
