Netflix It: The OA

by Kayla Murphy

“The biggest mistake I made was believing that if I cast a beautiful net, I’d catch only beautiful things” said the OA.

But what is the OA? …or rather, WHO?

Prairie Johnson, an adopted blind young woman, resurfaces after being missing for seven years. Upon her return, the small town is buzzing about how her eyesight has miraculously been restored.

She starts calling herself “The OA,” and mysterious looking scars appear all across her back. The OA refuses to answer her adoptive parents or the FBI about her disappearance, or the return of her eyesight. Instead, she befriends the town’s local bully and has him assemble a team of five locals, mostly high school boys and one school teacher. She explains her life story, how she grew up in Russia, was blinded in a freak field trip accident and was adopted by her American parents. Finally, The OA asks for their help to save the other missing people whom she claims are currently in another dimension.

Sophomore bio-molecular science student, Nick Waterhouse, says that show is very addicting.

“I would definitely recommend this show to others; it’s a little weird and trippy, but I think that’s what makes it so good,” says Waterhouse.

“I absolutely love it,” says  senior business management student Jason Pompee.

The series was created  and produced by Brit Marling, who plays the role of The OA. Working with director Zal Batmanglij, the two have been creating the concept for this show since December 2012. They found it difficult to summarize the show in written form, so they decided to pitch the show to studios as a play. After many hours of executives reading the script, Brad Pitt’s film production company Plan B Entertainment had The OA revealed to viewers on Netflix on March 5, 2015.

Filled with science fiction, mystery, fantasy and supernatural elements, this show was released on Netflix on December 16, 2016. The first season contains eight episodes, each at an hour long. Netflix recently announced on Feb 8. that a second season would be produced.
