With its first airing in 2016, 1980’s-based Netflix show “Stranger Things” became the main topic of discussion, attracting millions of viewers who have been hooked ever since.
Since then, it may seem like every person and their mother have binge-watched the show’s two seasons, but it is likely that some have yet to experience the enjoyment of this incredible masterpiece. If you haven’t already started watching “Stranger Things,” here are some reasons why you should.
1. The ’80s nostalgia:
Whether or not you grew up in this era, you can definitely get a taste of the ’80s from the fashion and technology depicted in this show. Seeing the main characters riding bikes everywhere they go and communicating through giant walkie-talkies considerably contrasts modern-day cell phones and endless social media. All the girls rocking short hair and wearing “mom jeans” definitely portrays the unique style of the decade.
2.) Winona Ryder’s reappearance on TV:
Female actress Winona Ryder had memorable roles in phenomenal classic movies such as “Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands” and “Girl Interrupted” in the ’90s. Now she’s back, her acting still as amazing as it always has been, playing an unforgettable character, Joyce Byers, in “Stranger Things.”
3.) The well-balanced humor and horror:
The show does a great job of displaying both mystery and comedy to its viewers. The creators of the show, the Duffer brothers, definitely succeed at keeping you on the edge of your seat without forgetting to make you laugh every once in a while. In between all the monsters, parallel universes, government conspiracies and telekinesis that leave viewers breathless, there are moments like Eleven’s undying love for Eggos and Dustin’s witty charm to ease the tension.
4.) The strong female characters:
Eleven, the mysterious young girl who comes off as dangerous to the other characters in the show, proves herself to be a true hero by the end of the second season. Nancy Wheeler, who starts off the show as a seemingly timid girl, morphs into a full-blown rebel as the plot progresses. Then there’s Maxine Mayfield, the tough skater girl who is unafraid to speak her mind. Kali, or “Eight,” shares similar supernatural abilities to Eleven, but chooses instead to use her powers to harm others rather than help them. Despite Kali’s short appearance on the show, we were able to obtain good insight to her reckless behavior and her character is certainly not one to be forgotten.
5.) The special effects are pretty awesome:
It’s easy to see for yourself. Seriously, things like the “monsters” and “The Upside Down” look almost life-like in this show. The effects definitely tie the show together and make the quality of it pretty great.
