Netflix It: ‘Supernatural’

by Sheelan Mohammed

Two brothers. Two Supernatural hunters. Many unbreakable bonds.

Follow Sam, played by Jared Padalecki, and Dean Winchester, played by Jensen Ackles, in their ever-lasting battle with malevolent supernatural creatures. These two brothers save lives for a living, but of course, this amount of danger doesn’t come without heartbreak.

The first episode, “Pilot,” starts off with the brothers’ backstories. Their mother was killed by a supernatural creature in her own home, and their father has taken on the notion to hunt down the thing that killed her. We are told that the brothers were trained by their father and that Sam decided to quit along the way to instead go to Harvard Law School.

Suddenly, their father goes missing. Dean is anxious. Confiding in Sam, this then starts the beginning of the rest of their lives.

They meet many people along the way, many of those whom they end up losing. This show casts a light on brotherly love, co-dependency and the tale of the supernatural world.

Any possible supernatural creature you can think of is featured in this show. Ghosts, ghouls, jinns, con-worms, leviathans, vampires, werewolves, Nephilim and reapers all make an appearance. The show starts to get real once angels and archangels are introduced and, along the way, God and the Devil themselves grace the screen.

The show is not all blood and angst, though. It is known for its ironic humor and iconic moments of comedic relief. The brothers come very close to death multiple times and, sometimes, they do die. Of course, on “Supernatural,” everyone comes back some way or another.

“This show touches every possible supernatural topic there is. It has many sides to it and it’s very long. It’s basically impossible that anyone would say something is missing,” says Haval Mohammed, Central Connecticut State University junior and fan.

The show came out in 2005 and has been on the air since then. It is on its 13th season currently, and the show is due to end this season. The upcoming episode is called “ScoobyNatural.” It features, Sam, Dean and their angel friend, Castiel, as they are transported to the animated world of Scooby Doo, where they are helped by the Scooby gang to solve a ghostly mystery.

The first 12 seasons can be streamed on Netflix. New episodes of “Supernatural” air on the CW Network on Thursdays at 8 p.m.
